Consider an optimization problem: a student has 120 metres of fencing to enclose three sides of a rectangular space beside a wall. Memorizing a derivative rule will not tell them what to do first. They must recognize that two widths and one length use the fencing, write the constraint (2x+y=120), and express the area as (A(x)=x(120-2x)). Only then does differentiation become useful. After finding a candidate maximum, they should check that its dimensions are possible and that the result answers the original question.
